Native American Beadwork

Native American Beadwork

by Georg Barth

An outstanding book that explains everything you need to know about beadwork techniques! Expertly researched and well illustrated, this is one of the best books available on the subject. Included are sections on materials, tools, lane-stitch, overlay-stitch, crow stitch, edge beading, woven beadwork, gourd-stitch, and much more. Contains clear line drawings and numerous photographs. If you could only have one book on beadwork techniques in your library, this is the one to have. Since it was first publisher, it has become a reference work that other authors frequently quote and almost always list in their biblography. Excellent!

Beadwork Techniques of the Native Americans

Beadwork Techniques of the Native Americans

by Scott Sutton

Though there are other how-to books on basic beadwork, this work by Scott Sutton is in a class by itself. Scott covers not only the rudiments but reveals tracks he's learned from his extensive experience as a bead worker. He shares techniques not found anywhere else and complements it all with large, highly detailed step-by-step color photos and illustrations. Even if you've done beadwork before, you'll no doubt lean ways to improve your craft.

This volume covers beadwork styles found among Native Americans on the western Plains, both past and present and includes loom work, appliqué, lane stitch, gourd (peyote), and more.

Also included is Scott's efficient method for making and beading a fine fitting pair of moccasins. To help those just getting started, Scott begins with a full discussion of appropriate beading supplies including instructions for building your own bead loom.

One shortcoming of other books is that most present few authentic beadwork designs. However, this work also features dozens of full-color photos of first-rate Indian and non-Indian made beadwork from museums, collections, and today's marketplace.

We've known Scott for nearly 30 years from the California Indian Hobbyist Association. He is known as a master beadworker and always has the finest cloths. We highly recommend his book to all beadworkers.
