Its design is balanced with arrowheads symbolizing bravery and pointing in all directions of Mother Earth. Designed in 1992, the Circle Of Life or Elders blanket is in honor of all tribal Elders, the Wisdom Keepers who hand down the teachings and spiritual direction to the children. This guidance gives the children a better understanding of their responsibility to the universe and The Creator, that all things are interrelated and an equal part of the whole. From 1991: The Turtle blanket is in recognition of the Iroquois Confederacy. Inspired by the Oneida, Seneca, Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga and Tuscoarora Nations, the Turtle design represents the Iroquois legend that the world was created on the shell of the Great Turtle. The Turtle was the only one with enough strength who could support the earth on its back, says the legend. In 1923 President Harding and his wife visited the West to dedicate a portion of the Old Oregon Trail. At that ceremony, local Cayuse and Umatilla chiefs presented the First Lady with a Pendleton shawl inspired by the already famous Chief Joseph blanket. This robe from our Heritage Collection is comparable to a twin blanket, the size originally used as a ceremonial robe by Native Americans.
