The First Flute

The First Flute

by Kevin Locke (Tokeya Inajin)

The First Flute is the ultimate presentation of American Indian flute, heard as it first was among the birds, wind, and waters of the Dakotas. Recorded at Sitting Bull's camp along the Grand River on the Standing Rock Reservation, internationally acclaimed traditional flute player Kevin Locke interprets centuries-old songs of the Lakota.

This is quite possibly the most "traditional" flute music ever recorded. All of the songs on this album are Kevin Locke's interpretation of wax cylinder recordings made by Frances Densmore between 1911 and 1914 at Fort Yates, North Dakota. Pure flute with nothing more than the sounds of bubbling brooks, birds, and the wind.

The CD insert has a nice history of Frances Densmore among the Lakota as well as many excerpts from the book Teton Sioux Music & Culture. While this book may seem to be about music, it is actually one of the best accounts of Lakota religion and beliefs. Lot's of great photos too. Highly recommended.
