Myrrh has been used since biblical times for a variety of uses, most commonly as an incense, but also as medicine, and for perfumes. In ancient times, it was considered extremely valuable and said to be worth as much as gold. The Egyptians are believed to have used it along with other substances for embalming. Myrrh has been shown to have analgesic and bacteriostatic properties and has been used for mouth ailments such as toothache and for use in mouthwashes and toothpastes.
