Cedar Bundles

Cedar Bundles

Calocedrus sp.

Cedar has long been used by Native Americans for ceremonial and medicinal uses. It is most often burned as incense and the smoke is said to attract good spirits and eliminate negative energies. It is frequently used in the sweat lodge ceremony where a few pinches of cedar needles are thrown on the red-hot rocks, immediately sparking into a yellow glow and releasing their aroma. The Plains Apache would burn cedar to repel ghosts, believing that ghosts disliked the smell and would not come near. Among the Pawnee, it is said that cedar smoke was used as a remedy for nervousness and bad dreams. Cedar was also believed to have protective properties and it is said that cedar boughs were placed on tipi poles to ward off lightning.

Our cedar is wildcrafted in California. The large bundles are about 9 inches long and 1½ inches wide.

Dakota Sage - Wrapped Bundle

Dakota Sage - Wrapped Bundle

Artemesia ludoviciana

Collected from the prairies and hills of the Dakotas, this sage is prized by the Plains Indians. Sometimes this is called white sage, other times gray sage. The common name is Cudweed Sagewort. The leaf is medium sized, somewhere between the narrow leaf of the desert sage and the broad leaf of the California white sage. The Cheyenne are said to call this "man sage" and it is extensively used by the Plains peoples in ceremonies. Its medicinal qualities are said to be good for treating headaches, coughs, stomach disorders, and more. Additionally, because of its pleasant scent, it has been used to deodorize feet, made into pillows, and burned to drive away mosquitoes. (from Grassland Plants of South Dakota and the Northern Great Plains, South Dakota State University)

This is our favorite sage and is what we like to use. The bundles are approximately 7 inches long and 1.5 inches wide.

Native harvested and made in Montana.

Juniper Bundles

Juniper Bundles

Juniperus occidentalis

Juniper was widely used by Native Americans as a medicinal plant. It was used to treat colds, as a cough medicine or as an aid to respiratory ailments by creating various decoctions made from the needles, twigs, or bark. Among the Cree, a poultice was made from the bark and applied to wounds for its believed antiseptic properties. Ceremonially, it is reported that the Cheyenne burned it as an incense to remove fear of thunder beings and also at childbirth to promote delivery. The Arapaho are said to have used a variety of juniper as a fragrance, grinding the needles for their scent.

Our juniper is wildcrafted in California. The bundles average 8-9 inches in length and 1½-2 inches in width.

Mugwort Bundle

Mugwort Bundle

Artemisia douglasiana

Mugwort is a common name that is used to describe several species of sage. Our mugwort is a variety that is native to the Western United States and is known as Douglas’s Sagewort but is also called California Mugwort, and Wormwood. Native Americans used this plant medicinally and ceremonially. The Chumash, Karok, Miwok, and Yurok are said to have used it to treat rheumatism, sometimes applying the leaves as a poultice and other times making a decoction that was taken internally. The Pomo used it to treat stomachache and cramps. The Paiute used it to treat colds and fevers, placing branches over a bed of ashes and sleeping on it.

Among the Miwok, mugwort was rubbed on the body to keep ghosts away. Necklaces were made with small balls that contained mugwort and other “medicine” and when worn, were believed to prevent dreaming of the dead and would allow one to go out at night without fear of ghosts.

Our mugwort is wildcrafted in California and Oregon. Bundles average about 9 inches in length and 1½ inches in width.

Yerba Santa Bundles

Yerba Santa Bundles

Eriodictyon trichocalyx

Yerba Santa was extensively used as a traditional medicine by many California Indian tribes. It is said that the leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma, coughs, colds, headaches, and stomachaches. Mashed leaves were applied externally to sores, cuts, wounds, and aching muscles. Mashed leaves were also used to reduce the swelling and relieve pain caused by bone fractures. Yerba Santa has a unqiue scent and is one of the few plants that actually smells "mediciney." There are several species that grow natively in California. Our variety is wildcrafted in Southern California and is commonly known as Hairy Yerba Santa. The Cahuilla called it tanwivel. Our bundles are approxinately 8-9 inches long and about 2 inches wide.

Please read our botanical warning.
